What about Matthew 23:23 (18/3/11)
This is one of the most common arguments presented in support of tithing today.
A simple examination of the context and what the scripture actually says dispels most claims or concerns about this referring to New Testament believers
Matt 23:23-24
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! NKJV
Many have heard the claim..."See, Jesus says you 'ought to tithe"..and.."Jesus here commends tithing"
HOWEVER when we examine the context of the above passage we see that it is part of 7 rebukes which Jesus made against the 'organised religion' of his day. It is addressed to those who are 'under the Law of Moses'
Matt 23:2
"The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat" NKJV......Tithing was a statute under the Law of Moses and ONLY applicable to the nation of Israel (Lev 27:1&34)
Matt 23:23
"Woe unto you"........this is certainly not a commendation
"Scribes and Pharisees"....the address is to religious leaders under the Law...the Old Covenant
"You pay tithe of mint, anise and cummin"....tithes were only ever of the produce of the land (Lev 27:30). The requirement to tithe NEVER applied to income earned by people (13 scriptures show this to be the case...eg Malachi 3..."that there may be FOOD in my house") ...and the pharisees certainly had money.
Note that anyone who changes the Law from tithing being food to tithing being money WILL be LEAST in the Kingdom of Heaven according to Jesus (Matt 5:19)
"You".....yes the Scribes and Pharisees
"have neglected the weightier matters of the LAW".....Jesus here states that tithing IS one of the "matters of the LAW". This means tithing is NOT an 'eternal or spiritual principle' which applied before the Law (or Jesus would have said so as he did about circumcision - John 7:22)
"These"....justice and mercy to the poor....and faithfullness with that which belongs to another
"Ought"....the requirement to do something is because it is part of the LAW
"You".... yes the Scribes and Pharisees again. Note Jesus is saying "you and not me" This is because under the Law tithes were NEVER of the income earned by anyone...ie carpenters, fishermen, tax collectors, doctors, soldiers, etc ... BUT ONLY produce from the promised land...such as the herbs the pharisees tithed on.
"to have done, without leaving the others undone"....the Law is a composite whole....failure in any one small part makes one guilty of breaking the whole Law (Deut 28:1-2 and 15, Gal 3:10 and James 2:10)...and yes under the LAW tithing of produce was required.
"Blind guides"...the Law comes with a veil that blinds people (2 Cor 3:14)
"who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel"....under the Law tithing was fair and easy....and it was a small and insignificant component. The people received the share of the land which the Levites had forfeited....and the people then gave the Levites the food grown on that share. They then all ATE the tithes together in a celebration of God's blessing on their crops at the festivals.
Today 'storehouse money tithing' is the GNAT....which is still being strained out of the Law (contrary to Acts 15). It is then totally twisted against God's command. Note also that very few of the other 612 Laws are taught as carrying over to the New Testament. Such inconsistency is unjustifiable!
The poor who are being robbed instead of being supported ......and the 'extraction' of money from the sheep by deception...IS THE CAMEL which is swallowed.
'Storehouse money tithing' as taught in many churches today is UNJUST....it is UNMERCIFUL....and it is UNFAITHFUL!
